Le Megan Jerome Trio est formé de Megan Jerome (piano, voix), Petr Cancura (saxophones, mandoline, mélodica, accordéon, voix) et Mike Essoudry (batterie, percussions, voix). La formation d’Ottawa est de retour après une impressionnante tournée canadienne qui leur a valu les éloges des médias et a placé This Uneven Pace au palmarès de plusieurs émissions de radio communautaire. Le trio compose de la musique intelligente et audacieuse, avec spontanéité et savoir-faire. Leurs prestations mettent en lumière le talent exceptionnel des musiciens ainsi que la voix intrigante et parfois provocante de Megan Jerome.
Petr Cancura est un musicien imaginatif, chaleureux et gracieux qui témoigne d’un grand talent pour l’improvisation. Très recherché grâce à sa voix originale, il a participé à des spectacles et à des enregistrements avec Danilo Perez, Bob Moses, Kathleen Edwards, John Lockwood, Joe Maneri, Cecil McBee et Mighty Popo, lauréat d’un prix Juno. En 2004, Petr est déménagé à Boston pour obtenir sa maîtrise au New England Conservatory. Durant ses études, il a réalisé de nombreux projets à succès, a dirigé de nombreuses formations et a fait une résidence à la prestigieuse MIM Society (Modern Improvised Music) de Boston. Aujourd’hui, Petr continue de jouer avec des musiciens provenant de partout au monde, ce qui atteste sa versatilité et sa capacité de traverser différents genres de musique...
On reconnaît Mike Essoudry par ses prestations de percussions vivantes et sensibles et par sa grande intuition musicale. Mike a étudié la batterie avec Chris McCann, Dave Laing et Michel Lambert. Il a obtenu un baccalauréat en Musique de l’Université Carleton et une maîtrise en Musique (Jazz Drumset Performance) de l’Université McGill en 2003. Mike compose de la musique originale et fait des arrangements musicaux pour un quatuor et un orchestre de huit musiciens, qui présentent des spectacles à Ottawa et à Montréal. À Ottawa, Mike fait régulièrement des prestations d’improvisation et de jazz libre avant-gardiste avec Linsey Wellman et avec la formation Parade.
An imaginative, warm and graceful improviser, Petr Cancura is sought-after for his original voice. He has recorded and performed with Danilo Perez, Bob Moses, Kathleen Edwards, John Lockwood, Joe Maneri, Cecil McBee and the Juno award-winning Mighty Popo. In 2004, Cancura moved to Boston to pursue a Masters degree at the New England Conservatory. During this time, he led many successful groups and projects, including the artistic residency with Boston’s prestigious MIM (Modern Improvised Music) Society. Today Cancura lives in NYC and continues to perform with artists from all over the world, attesting to his cross-genre versatility..
Mike Essoudry is known as a sensitive yet active and responsive drummer, with strong musical intuition. He received a Master of Music degree (Jazz Drumset Performance) from McGill University in 2003. Mike studied drums with Chris McCann, Dave Laing and Michel Lambert. He composes and arranges contemporary jazz for a quartet and an octet, performing with both in Ottawa and Montreal. In Ottawa Mike performs regularly in avant-garde free jazz and improv settings with Parade and with Linsey Wellman.
The Megan Jerome Trio includes Megan Jerome (voice, piano), Petr Cancura (sax, mandolin, voice) and Mike Essoudry (drums, percussion, voice). Megan grew up on Sudbury Sunday singalongs where after-dinner coffee came with family and friends gathered around the piano, playing and singing songs from the 20s through folk tunes, old and new. Petr is a true Bohemian. His musical style fuses folk songs from his native Czech with jazz. Mike is rooted in popular music - rock and jazz, and brings his own blend of groove/riff based playing to the trio.
Megan, Mike and Petr met at Carleton University's music program, and were friends long before the trio took shape. All enjoy teaching and share an open spirit about music-making - clearly evident in performance as well as in smaller workshop settings. The Megan Jerome Trio's sound has grown organically from each member's individual musical styles and from their mutual respect and admiration.
